Arunachal Governor calls for water conservation

ITANAGAR, June 27 - Stressing the need of conserving every drop of water, Arunachal Pradesh Governor Brig Dr BD Mishra (retd) has urged officials of the Public Health Engineering and Water Supply departments to explore ways to motivate people to go for rainwater harvesting and increase the catchment areas.

Reviewing the status of water supply and sanitation in the State with PHED Minister Wangki Lowang and top officials of the department in a meeting at the Raj Bhavan here today, the Governor also stressed on involving people in water conservation through innovative methods.

He cited the initiative taken by one Egam Basar for rejuvenation of water sources in the forests of Basar in Leparada district.

Mishra asked the departmental engineers to find ways to mitigate water shortage during the dry season, and to install groundwater recharge structures. He also urged the officers to ensure supply of potable water to the people, especially in the semi-urban areas, to prevent any possible outbreak of water-borne diseases.

He suggested composite use of solar and electric power to reduce the energy charges of pump water.

Setting an example in optimum use of water resources, the Governor advised water budgeting on the Raj Bhavan premises.

He also suggested the setting up of a grey water management system to reuse treated grey water for local horticulture and kitchen gardens.

Sharing his observations, the PHED Minister advocated concerted efforts from all departments for inculcating the habit of water conservation among the people.
