Artiste Padma Koiri passes away

BISWANATH CHARIALI, June 8 - Prominent artiste, actor, filmmaker, first film director of the tea community and former Independent MLA of Biswanath Legislative Constituency Padma Koiri passed away at the age of 70 last night.

Koiri, who had been ill for a long time, was undergoing treatment in Guwahati. Padma Kairi died on Sunday night while undergoing treatment at the Down Town Hospital, Guwahati.

He was the producer, director and actor of Budhu Arjun, a popular film based on the tea community. He also made and acted in a good number of films including Ranganadi, Ratanlal, Maya, Maa etc. In addition to this, late Koiri also produced and directed several popular serials for Doordarshan, Guwahati and North-East. He also acted in several episodes.

In 1985, Koiri became the MLA of Biswanath Legislative Constituency after winning the election as an Independent candidate.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, a daughter and a host of relatives.

The last rites were performed here today with full state honours. State Minister for Handloom and Textile Ranjit Dutta, MLAs Pramod Borthakur and Utpal Borah, Deputy Commissioner of Biswanath Dhruva Jyoti Das and representatives of several organizations paid their last tributes to the departed soul.
