Artist Dhruba Deka no more

GUWAHATI, Dec 6 - Noted artist and president of Guwahati Artists� Guild, Dhruba Deka, passed away at a city hospital this afternoon. He was 67.

Deka, who was diagnosed with dengue during a trip to Majuli in connection with an art exhibition on November 27, suffered a stroke a couple of days ago. Following this, he was admitted to a city hospital.

Born in Guwahati in 1950, Deka graduated from Bihpuria College. His father Abhay Deka was a sports organiser and mother Sabitri Deka a Gandhian.

A self-taught artist, he was a gold medallist at the Gauhati University Yuva Mahotsav. A founder member of the Gauhati Artists� Guild, he served it in various capacities since 1976. He excelled in water colour and cover page design. He also set up an art centre at his home.

He leaves behind his wife Nila Krishna Deka, two daughters and a son, besides a host of relatives. His last rites were performed at Navagraha. His body was brought to the Guild office for enabling its members to pay their respects to the departed artist.

The All Guwahati Students� Union has condoled Deka�s death. In a statement, the students� body said that Deka�s contribution to the sphere of art and Assam�s social life would always be remembered.
