Arrested IAS officer released on bail

IMPHAL, July 25 - A senior IAS officer, who was arrested in a corruption case, has been released on bail �on medical ground�, sources here said.

A team of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Police here arrested Thaithuilung Pamei (52), a former Director of Tribal Affairs Hills and Scheduled Castes Development Department, from the Takyelpat area near the State Academy of Training (SAT) premises here on charges of alleged misappropriation of government funds, on July 22, official sources said.

Pamei, who is the current Director General of the SAT, was arrested on charges of alleged misappropriation of Rs 99.50 lakh meant for construction of an ST boys� hostel under the Special Development Fund at Kabo Leikai in Imphal East district in 2010.

He was remanded in police custody after appearing before the court of the Special Judge (PC Act) on Tuesday. The same court heard the case again on Wednesday and released him on bail on a PR bond of Rs 1 lakh with one Manipur Government surety of the like amount, the sources added.

In his court application, the counsel of the accused said his client is �innocent and falsely been implicated in the case�, and that a high-powered committee has been constituted to look into the matter. The alleged misappropriated amount will come back to the State exchequer, the application added.
