Arrest warrant issued against Meghalaya MLA

By Staff Correspondent

SHILLONG, Jan 5 - After a lower court issued an arrest warrant against MLA Julius Dorphang in a sexual exploitation case, the Meghalaya police has widened its search, seeking assistance from neighbouring States to help track the MLA, who is absconding.

SP, (City) Vivek Syiem informed that Meghalaya police has written to its Assam counterpart, especially to Guwahati police and also other States to assist in nabbing the MLA.

We have searched all the probable places in the State, but he is nowhere to be found. So we have alerted our NE counterparts to keep a vigil in case Dorphang is found, Syiem added.

The police have also prayed before the lower court today to include section 5 of Protection of Children against Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against the accused.

Syiem said strong evidences are there against the MLA. The police in this regard have seized the CCTV of Marvelenes Inn guest house, which belongs to Home Minister HDR Lyngdohs family.

The case against Dorphang was filed after a minor escaped from Marvelenes Inn. She reported to police that she was sexually exploited on several occasions by several people including Dorphang.

However, the CCTV at Marvelenes Inn was out of order for quite sometime. The forensic team would be investigating the available footage of the CCTV and see what evidences it throws up, the City SP said.

Meanwhile, Syiem said the police has been given a free hand in dealing with the case. There is no pressure from any quarter, he stated.
