Arrest of Katigorah MLA demanded

By Correspondent

SILCHAR, May 18 The Akhil Bharatiya Adhivakta Parishad, Cachar district committee has demanded immediate arrest of Katigorah legislator Ataur Rahman Majharbhuiyan for inciting communal hatred.

Advocate Anil Chandra Dey, district president of the Parishad on Sunday said that Deputy Commissioner GM Hazarika must speak to the Speaker of the Assam Assembly and arrest the legislator or Majharbhuiyan must be given two days time as he had wished to test communal might between the Hindus and Muslims.

Majharbhuiyan had allegedly remarked during a meeting convened by the deputy commissioner after the recent incident of killing of Babul Goala that the if the district administration keeps its hands withdrawn for two days, the might of both the communities would be put to test. Santanu Naik, zonal secretary of the Parishads Northeast zone, said that it is unfortunate that the deputy commissioner, being the head of the district and an eyewitness to the remarks passed by the MLA, has not yet taken any action against Majharbhuiyan.

If Majharbhuiyan thinks he is representing a particular community, he must resign from his post. The deputy commissioner should take suo moto cognizance for the alleged remarks, Naik said. Members of the advocates body made it clear that if the deputy commissioner fails to take action against Majharbhuiyan, they will take up the issue on legal grounds.

Meanwhile, Majharbhuiyan told the media that it is the BJP and a few Hindu organisations who are hell bent on fanning communal discord in the Barak Valley. The veteran legislator said that he is ready to go to jail for the cause of the nation, but will never compromise with peace and harmony between the communities.
