Army imparts vocational training to Rupai women

TINSUKIA, May 17 � Advanced vocational training courses for women was conducted at Rupai by 8th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles under the aegis of the Dah Division.

A basic vocational training course was conducted last year, which drew warm response from the people of the area. Based on their feedback, an advanced course with enlarged scope and greater vacancies was conducted by the unit this year.

A total of 60 women received training in various disciplines like tailoring, carpet weaving, nursing & midwifery and basic computer skills over a period of six weeks. At the end of the course the participants received sewing machines, tool kits, medical kit and certificates from government recognised institutes. The course was run at Doomdooma College campus.

This project, conducted under Operation Sadbhavana of the Army will enable the trainees to gain meaningful employment.

Speaking on the occasion of the valedictory function held at Doomdooma College complex on May 6, Brigadier Asit Mistry, Commander, Laipuli Brigade said that the Army was committed towards reaching out to the people in far flung and remote areas with the aim of helping them to help themselves.

This project was a step in that direction by enabling womenfolk in remote areas of Tinsukia district to acquire skills to earn livelihood and support themselves. A lively cultural programme was arranged by the local artistes and children on the occasion.

The gaonburahs and people of villages around Rupai expressed their gratitude to the Army for this initiative. It will go a long way in fostering closer ties between the local populace and the Army, besides helping needy families in the area, they felt.

Total sanitation: To create awareness on hygiene, sanitation and health amongst the tea garden labour community, the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department with the cooperation of district administration and coordination of Wash, an NGO engaged in Tinsukia district for implementation of the total sanitation programme of the Central government, a series of activities were undertaken.

In the first phase of the four-day programme that started on Sunday under the programme, cycle rallies were taken out in the targeted 16 tea gardens, namely Nokhroy, Gelapukhuri, Katchujan, Padumoni, Haveda, Bajaloni, Jalpania, Deohal, Khato, Tengapani, Mahakali, Sukanpukhuri, Dhelakhat, Mothola, etc., within the district.

The managements, workers of the health department of the tea estates also took part in the awareness rallies. The next phase of the programmes will be held on May 16 with awareness procession, cleanliness drive on May 20 inspections of drainage systems, potable water system and water logging areas of the targeted tea gardens on May 29.
