GOALPARA, Jan 23 - The Red Horns Division of the Indian Army, Balijana has donated books and furniture to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Library cum Auditorium here in Goalpara at a solemn function organised on the occasion at the library premises recently.
Inaugurating the event and receiving the books from the Red Horn division, Deputy Commissioner Varnali Deka speaking on the occasion said that the initiatives taken up by Army�s Red Horn Division is highly commendable. She appreciated the noble gesture of Army personnel and thanked them for promoting the oldest library of lower Assam with the aim to develop and promote reading habits among the students and youngsters of the area. She also said that books are excellent teachers and the habit of reading books from an early age helps in building good communication skills, creativity, imagination and develop a children�s mind. It is through books information relating to various subjects are made available. Deka also thanked the organisers and showered unstinted praises to the secretary of the library Sailen Das for his active interest in trying to improve the library.
Lt Gen DPS Rawat of the Red Horn division, in his speech, said that it is the endeavour of the Indian Army to promote reading habits among youngsters and the books donated on the occasion will enrich the library, which is centrally located and easily accessible to the public. He also said that the public library will help to change the mindset, specially of youngsters and help them to acquire the power of reasoning. The Indian army is on the forefront for propagating importance of education and this event was aimed at providing resources to meet the needs of individuals and groups for education, information and personality development including recreation and leisure.
The general also thanked the organiser and the district administration for their cooperation and assistance.
Earlier, the objective of the meeting was explained by the secretary of the library, Sailen Das. The event was then followed by a Kavi Sammelan.
Among the prominent people who attended the event include Jesmine Sultana, Prahori Das, Pankaja Das, Yosuf Ali, Nakul Das, Abedur Rahman Saikia, Ira Nath, Latika Choudhury, Uttam Sarma and others.
