Arms seized

By Correspondent

AIZAWL, Aug 21 - A joint team of the Serchhip-based Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police recovered three AK-56 rifles and three magazines from Samthang village in Champhai district near the Myanmar border in the wee hours today. A Myanmar national was arrested in this connection, a press release issued by Assam Rifles stated. The weapons were hidden in a house at the village.

The accused was handed over to Champhai Police along with the seized arms by the Assam Rifles troops for further investigation.

The release added that in recent times, Mizoram has seen a spike in smuggling, especially of weapons, warlike stores, drugs, gold and exotic animals.

The operation conducted by the Assam Rifles highlights the strict vigil maintained by the force in its area of responsibility, and exhibits the coordination among the law-enforcement agencies to curb cross-border illegal activities.

On August 4, a team of Assam Rifles had recovered 199 live rounds of 22 ammunition from the possession of two persons.
