By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, July 31 The Armed Forces Tribunal, Regional Bench, Guwahati was inaugurated today to address the grievances of the Armed Forces personnel, said an official press release here. This is one of the nine such tribunals in the country.

The inaugural function was presided over by Justice AK Mathur, Chairperson, Armed Forces Tribunal, and attended by Justice Madan B Lokur, Chief Justice, Gauhati High Court as the chief guest.

In his inaugural address, Justice Mathur said that starting of this tribunal is a historic occasion for the Armed Forces and a much-awaited one and said that justice has finally come to the doorsteps of the Armed Forces. This will help in quicker disposal of cases and will provide easy accessibility for the Armed Forces personnel.

Justice Mathur also said that 1200 cases have been disposed of within one year in Delhi itself and he was hopeful that these tribunals will reach out to people in the remote areas, especially war widows, who wait for years to get proper justice.

He maintained that the legal bench must be properly strengthened so that people, who are court-martialled, receive unbiased justice in a fair manner.

Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, Madan B Lokur said in his speech that a long-standing demand of the Armed Forces has been met with by establishing this tribunal. He also said that since the tribunal will have independent members as judges, it would be impartial in handling the cases.

Earlier, in his welcome address, CY Somaya Julu, Member (Judicial) Armed Forces Tribunal, Regional Bench, Guwahati said that the Armed Forces have worked dedicatedly and hence it has become all the more important that justice comes to them at a faster pace without any hassles.

The vote of thanks was given by CMDE (retd.) Mohan Phadke, member Administrative. A lot of distinguished guests from the Air Force and the judiciary attended the meeting.
