AREIDA seeks fair pricing of local cement

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, July 17 The Assam Real Estate and Infrastructure Developers Association (AREIDA) has asked the State Industry Minister Pradyut Bordoloi to fulfil his commitment made in the State Assembly on July 15 and take steps to fix a fair and reasonable price of locally manufactured cement in Assam.

The Minister also stated on the floor of the Assembly that a meeting of such manufacturers would be convened soon on this issue, a statement from AREIDA mentioned.

We would like to insist that we as major consumers of cement have been fighting against the unfair practices of such cement manufacturers for the past several years. We cannot agree with the Ministers statement that price of locally manufactured cement cannot be regulated by the government. If the benefits of Central and State subsidies under the North East Industrial and Investment Policy go only to such industries, without any benefit whatsoever to the people of Assam, why is the State government loosing out by granting them 99 per cent vat exemption? the statement questioned mentioning that let either public benefit by reasonable pricing or the public exchequer by increased tax collection.

The association also demanded that the meeting with cement manufacturers should also include representatives of consumers associations like AREIDA, so that the exercise brings tangible public benefits.
