AREIDA files PIL against power tariff hike

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, July 1 The Assam Real Estate & Infrastructure Developers Association (AREIDA) has filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Gauhati High Court opposing the recent power tariff hike.

In a statement here today, the president of the AREIDA, PK Sharma, said that there should be an independent inquiry into all the tariff orders passed by the Assam Electricity Regulatory Authority (AERC) and Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) since 2000 by a judge of the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity in New Delhi. The association also said that till such an inquiry is completed, no hike in electricity tariff should be allowed.

The AREIDA alleged that the AERC violated the provisions of the Regulatory Commission and Electricity Act by allowing a 13 paisa per unit hike in power tariff against cost of fuel even without the mandatory audited accounts of the APDCL.

The AREIDA further said that the Eastern India Powertech Limited, known as the DLF power, is generating power for the ASEB since 2001. But till date, all the tariff petitions filed by the company were accepted as provisional without initiating any public hearing in violation of the rules. The people of the State have the right to demand explanations from the AERC and the APDCL on the price of power purchased from the DLF, the statement said.
