Areca nut worth Rs 2.76 crore seized

GUWAHATI, Sept 27 - During a search operation, sleuths of the Customs department seized 72 metric tonnes of areca nut of foreign origin at Khanapara last night, which was suspected to have been smuggled in from Myanmar.

The areca nut seized from three trucks at 9th Mile, Khanapara was worth around Rs 2.76 crore.

Three persons were apprehended in this connection.

�Acting on specific intelligence, a team of officers led by Om Prakash Tiwary, Deputy Commissioner, Customs (Preventive) Division, Guwahati, seized the consignment suspected to have been smuggled in from Myanmar through the Indo-Myanmar border in Mizoram,� an official press release stated.

The consignment was being transported from Kalain in Cachar district and Aizawl in Mizoram and was on its way to West Bengal. Investigation is on in this regard.
