Arambam Samarendra remembered

IMPHAL, June 10 � The people of Manipur on Tuesday remembered late Arambam Samarendra on his 14th death anniversary. Samarendra, besides being a playwright and lyricist, also fought for upliftment of women, equality of farmers and for unity and integrity of Manipur.

The main observance was held at Khurai Nandeibam Leikai in Manipur�s Imphal East district under the joint aegis of Arambam Samarendra Memorial Trust and Social Standard Club along with offering rich floral tributes to the life size statue of the late social activist installed at Khurai Nandeibam Leikai ground located on the Imphal river bank.The floral tribute was led by father of the social worker Thounaojam Iboyaima and Professor Kamarulzaman Askandar of University Sains Malaysia accompanied by academician Prof Arambam Lokendra.

The Koi, a musical group performed the famous song Chaikhre Ngashi Nangi Labukta. The lyrics of the song was written by the departed playwright.

Later, a child�s play Pana Kangjei was also performed by Kangjabi Meitei Chanu Artiste cum Drama Association.

On the other hand, the 9th Arambam Samarendra Memorial Lecture was also held at Manipur Dramatic Union (MDU) hall in the afternoon wherein Professor Askandar delivered a lecture on �Nation and State-building, Self-determination and Conflict Resolution in Southeast Asia�.

President of the Elders Council Dr L Debabrata Roy presided over the memorial lecture.Group Editor of Imphal Free Press Pradip Phanjoubam and assistant professor of Tribal Studies, Indira Gandhi National Tribal University also attended the lecture programme. Chairman of the Arambam Somorendra Trust Dr Arambam Lokendra also shared in the day�s dias.
