PATACHARKUCHI, Aug 1 - Assam Rifles jawan Pranay Kalita, who was martyred in an encounter with militants in Manipur on Wednesday, was cremated with full military honours at his native village Gahatbar Saderi in Bajali subdivision of Barpeta district last evening.

Heart-rending scenes were witnessed at his house when his mortal remains draped in the tricolour arrived yesterday.

Kalita was given a tearful farewell by his grief-stricken family members, including his wife and two children.

The district administration had made all the arrangements for the cremation near his house.

Earlier, the officials of the Assam Rifles received the body at Guwahati airport and handed it over to his family.

State Irrigation Minister Bhabesh Kalita, Barpeta Deputy Commissioner Munindra Sarma and other Government officials, besides hundreds of people visited Kalitas residence to pay their last respects.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had directed the district administration officials to visit the house of the martyred jawan and offer condolences to the bereaved family members.

Kalita leaves behind his wife Jumi Kalita, two minor daughters, his parent and brothers. He was the son of Hariprasad Kalita and Kalyani Kalita of Gahatbar Saderi, around four km from Pathsala town.

The slain jawan was aged around 38 years and joined service in 2001.

His friends and acquaintances remembered him as an amicable and soft-spoken man who was a good sportsman.

Kalita and two other Assam Rifles personnel were killed and at least six others injured in a militant attack in Khongtal area of Manipurs Chandel district near the Indo-Myanmar border at around 6.30 pm on Wednesday.
