APW appeal to start NRC update

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 31 The Assam Public Works urged the State government to start the NRC update process at any two legislative constituencies, which do not have names of suspected Bangladeshi voters.

In a statement the APW said that the Barpeta constituency has a large number of Bangladeshi voters, which has prevented smooth conduct of the update process there, including the violence on July 21. It strongly refuted that there were anomalies in the citizenship form as alleged by certain vested interest quarters.

The Assam Sanmilita Mahasangha, an indigenous peoples organization, has also expressed serious concern over the developments and said that there has been a conspiracy to include names of illegal foreigners into the NRC. The Mahasangha called upon all concerned to put up a united stand to foil the evil designs of the vested interested groups and safeguard the interest of the indigenous people.

The Mahasangha, which had already submitted memorandums to the President and the Prime Minister on the issue recently, has resolved to move the Gauhati High Court and the Supreme Court for ensuring that a correct NRC is prepared.
