Apurba, Papul showing promise

GUWAHATI, July 17 � Apurba Chetia and Papul Changmai has drawn the attention of Indian Weightlifting Federation with encouraging performances in the recently concluded Junior Asian Weightlifting Championship at Kyrgyzstan.

While Apurba won two silver and a bronze, Papul lifted three bronze medals in the meet. With 132kg snatch and 160kg jerk, Papul, in the 69kg weight category, definitely showed adequate promise. Similarly Apurba, a competitor in the 56kg weight group, lifted 100kg snatch, 130kg jerk which itself speaks volumes of his potentiality.

Earlier, Papul won a gold medal in the Youth Commonwealth Championship in 2010 at Malaysia and a bronze in Junior Commonwealth meet in South Africa last year. Apurba lifted a silver medal at the South Africa meet in the youth category. Now both the youngsters are attending a national camp in Patiala.

Considering their performances in international and national championships, both Apurba and Papul are on their way to become prominent weightlifters. Both the weightlifters now need patronage to develop their standards. The officials of the Assam Weightlifting Association have urged the State Government and corporate houses to provide financial assistance to these promising weighlifters so that they can earn laurels for the State.
