TURA, June 27 - Several student bodies have called for picketing of the office of the East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner over the alleged delay in the appointment of principal at the Williamnagar College.
The student bodies had set a deadline in this regard 15 days back, but the Government has apparently taken no action to meet the demand. The college has been running without a principal after the retirement of the last occupant, Paritosh Chakroborty, on January 28. This has caused a lot of resentment among student bodies.
The GSU, FKJGP, Williamnagar Government College Students Union and AAYF have called for the picket from 9 am to 4 pm on July 2 and 3.
We submitted a memorandum to the Director of Higher and Technical Education in Shillong on June 2 demanding appointment of a principal at the college within 15 days. The post has been vacant since January, but there has been no response from the Government, said president of the GSU, East Zone, Saljrang TR Marak.
Williamnagar College is the only government institution of higher learning in East Garo Hills district.
We have been forced to go for an agitation as the Government has refused to take any concrete steps to fulfil our genuine demand, Marak added.
