Appointment of nodal officer draws flak

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, March 28 - The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Assam Pradesh while strongly expressing its reservations against the appointment of SN Singh, as nodal officer of Assam Assembly election, 2016, Assam Police headquarters alleged that many documentary evidence raise doubt about the moral integrity of the officer.

The party has lodged a complaint with the Chief Electoral Officer, Assam objecting against this development and insisting for immediate corrective measures so that the electorate can have full faith in the democratic traditions of the country.

The party referring to the notorious Saradha chit fund scam alleged that SN Singh's role in the entire episode had been dubious as he had issued an official letter dated 1.1.2013 directing all district SPs including SSP (Guwahati city) to provide police protection to all Saradha offices. What is more, Singh even directed all police stations for not taking any action against the company and restricting the police from registering any FIR against the company, alleged Vijay Kumar Gupta, general secretary of the State BJP.

Gupta said that though the Political (Vigilance Cell) Department of the Government had directed the Addl Director General of Police (Vigilance and Anti-Corruption), Assam to initiate a regular inquiry against some senior police officers, including SN Singh, it has been stopped on another order of the Government.

Now the Assam Government in a recent notification has appointed Singh as the nodal officer. As all circumstances and documentary evidence point the needle of suspicion towards Singh, we find it highly objectionable that an officer with such tainted image has been entrusted with such a responsible position, said Gupta, adding that this development reflects the conspiracy of the Congress Government to influence the election.

Gupta also mentioned that holding such a sensitive post by a tainted officer point towards the vested intention to frustrate the mandate of the people in the coming election. We apprehend that Singh might have accepted some political favour from the Congress government for stalling the regular inquiry against him and in return he will use all the powers bestowed upon him to help the Congress, said Gupta. The BJP has urged the election authorities to remove Singh from the post of nodal officer for ensuring free and fair election.
