Appeal to look into cases of police inaction

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, May 3 - Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia has called upon the Assam Police Accountability Commission to look into two recent cases of alleged police inaction.

I would like to request you to look into police inaction regarding two important cases which may well destroy communal harmony and instigate social and communal tension in Assam, Saikia stated in a letter to the chairman of the Commission.

He said that a highly objectionable comment was made in a letter written by a Foreigners Tribunal member to a Cabinet Minister of Assam while making donation for Assam CARE Fund, which was reported in the media.

Another communally-coloured comment was posted on the social media which misrepresented a poem written by Padma Shri awardee and former Member of Parliament Late Syed Abdul Malik questioning the deceased litterateurs patriotism and integrity, stated Saikia.

He added, I think the Assam Police has a cyber cell and regularly monitors posts on the social media. In spite of this, no action has been taken against a section of those who have posted/uttered various remarks which have damaged social harmony in Assam. As such, I hope you will direct the Home & Political Affairs Department, Government of Assam, as well as the Assam Police to initiate strict action against the perpetrators in question.
