GUWAHATI, July 11 - The Assam State Electricity Supply Mazdoor Union has opposed the reported move of the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited to hand over 59 33/11 KV sub-centres to private parties for their routine functioning and maintenance.

In a statement, the workers union said that the move is against the public utility character of the power sector and demanded that the APDCL rescind the move.

It accused the authorities of being insensitive towards the demand for regularisation of the services of a large number of temporary workers engaged in various jobs in the APDCL.

In the interest of the workers and in greater public interest, we demand that the government maintain the public character of the power sector and withdraw its privatisation policy for various power utilities, it said.
