APCC urges Govt to prepare NRC in proper way

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, July 23 The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) today urged upon the State government to go ahead with the preparation of NRC in a proper manner taking into account the concerns voiced by different sections of the society.

The committee also asked the Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to institute an enquiry into the violent incident that took place in Barpeta on July 21.

Addressing a press meet today, APCC general secretary Haren Das said that the violence in Barpeta district on July 21 was a result of misunderstanding and misleading propaganda by a section of people with vested interests, who are not in favour of expeditious preparation of NRC.

The NRC update was launched in Barpeta and Chayagaon on a pilot basis in order to find out the problem that may crop up in future, when the actual preparation of NRC is taken up, Das mentioned.

It would be wrong to assume that the results of the pilot project will be the sole criteria for NRC. There would be further inputs as things develop and different view points will be taken care of on the light of experience gained in the pilot project, he said further adding that if necessary, the government should start pilot projects in other parts of the State, specially in Upper Assam.

Appealing all sections of the people to maintain peace and harmony, the APCC also asked the government to ensure that the experiences gained in the course of the ongoing pilot projects are utilised in the preparation NRC and the mistakes detected in the pilot projects are corrected so that the NRC, when prepared, enjoys the confidence of all sections of the society.

Expressing concern over the situation in Barpeta he expressed the apprehensions that the entire incident was the handiwork of a group of people who are engaged in a conspiracy to obstruct the preparation of NRC, refusing to name any particular group.

The APCC expresses deep concern over the loss of five innocent lives and requests the government to give adequate compensation to the bereaved families and free treatment for the injured persons, he mentioned.
