APCC stages protest against Governor

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 23 Members of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) today staged a demonstration in front of the Raj Bhawan here in protest against the alleged unconstitutional activities of Governor (Acting) P B Acharya and thereby lowering the sanctity and dignity of the office of the Governor. They demanded steps from the President of India either to restrain the Governor or to relieve him from his additional charge of Assam.

Besides, they also demanded removal of Union Foreign Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj for her links with tainted former IPL chief Lalit Modi, and institution of an inquiry to probe the allegation of receiving illegal gratification by Dushyant Singh, MP, who is the son of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia.

Office-bearers of the Pradesh Congress Committee, its frontal organisations like the Youth Congress, Mahila Congress and NSUI among others, also took part in the demonstration.

They sent a memorandum to President Pranab Mukherjee through the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (Metro), listing the alleged pro-BJP activities of Governor Acharya, which include his statement at a public meeting organised by the Keshab Smarak Sanskrit Samittee and Patanjali Yoga Committee in Silchar on June 20 and his act of nominating members of the RSS and its frontal organisations to the Dibrugarh University Court, among others.

The Governor had reportedly claimed on June 20 in Silchar that the Congress has surpassed the Mughals and Britishers in looting the country. This is a direct insult to the martyrs and fighters of the freedom struggle of the country, alleged the APCC in its memorandum.

Moreover, he had recently nominated 12 members to the Dibrugarh University Court, four of whom have no other background except the Rastriya Swayamsevak Sangha (RSS) background, alleged the APCC in its memorandum.
