APCC ridicules Himantas claim

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 2 - The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) today described as ludicrous the claims of former minister Himanta Biswa Sarma that a host of Congress legislators would soon join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following in his footsteps. It has dared the former minister to make the 10 Congress legislators, who met him at the Borjhar airport on August 28, to switch over to the saffron party. Sarma joined the BJP on August 28 by deserting the Congress.

In a statement here this evening, APCC general secretary Mukul Sarma said that Himanta Biswa Sarma once claimed that 52 Congress legislators had supported him in writing when senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge visited the State to take stock of the situation in the States Congress Legislature Party.

Later, he claimed that he had submitted a list of 40 Congress legislators to the BJP top brass. But when he arrived at Guwahati to formally join the BJP, only 10 Congress legislators met him at the Borjhar airport. Of them, several legislators have given in writing to the APCC leadership that they are not quitting the Congress.

The APCC general secretary alleged that the former minister has been misleading the political circles deliberately with concocted figures of his supporters within the States Congress Legislature Party.
