APCC reviews poll performance

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, May 21 The office-bearers of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) reviewed the performance of the State wing of the party in the recent Lok Sabha elections at a meeting held at the Rajiv Bhawan here today.

Though they admitted that there was in fact a Modi wave, yet they did not consider this wave as the sole factor responsible for the Congress debacle in the Lok Sabha elections in Assam. Indiscipline and individual agenda of a section of the party MLAs were equally responsible for the party debacle in Assam, they observed, covertly referring to the activities of the dissident MLAs.

According to sources in the APCC, the party office-bearers were of the view that activities of the members of this section of the MLAs made the Congress loathsome for a sizeable section of the States people.

The performance of the Government and the Ministers and the latters growing distance with the voters and party workers were also held responsible as a contributing factor for the partys miserable performance in the Lok Sabha elections by the office-bearers.

The failure of the State Government to distribute development funds equally among all the areas was also seen as an additional factor for the partys dismal performance in the Lok Sabha elections by the APCC office-bearers.

In addition, they observed, the party also failed to attract the new generation of the States people to its fold as the Government led by it was not able to provide employment to the members of this generation of people.

The office-bearers urged all the party members to voice their grievances in the party forums maintaining the party discipline, reminding them of the sacrifices made by the grassroot level workers of the party, said the sources.

The office-bearers fixed May 29 and 30 as the tentative dates for the extended meeting of the APCC executive committee to which the party MLAs, Minister and MPs will be invited as special invitees, sources said.
