GUWAHATI, July 19 - Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) workers today staged a protest in front of the State party headquarters Rajiv Bhawan here to protest the detention of party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in Uttar Pradesh.
Congress workers held a demonstration and raised slogans against the NDA regime.
Priyanka was stopped from visiting Sonbhadra in Uttar Pradesh where 10 people were shot dead on Wednesday over a land dispute.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia condemned the detention of the Congress general secretary and demanded her unconditional release.
I condemn in the strongest terms the Uttar Pradesh governments despotic act of illegally arresting Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra today while she was on her way to offer her condolences in person to the families of 10 tribal inhabitants who were massacred and 18 others who were injured in Ubha village in Sonbhadra district last Wednesday during an attempt by goons to forcibly take possession of a disputed plot of land. Priyanka Gandhi Vadras unwarranted arrest is an attempt by the Yogi Adityanath Ministry to cover up its abject failure to control lawless mafia in Uttar Pradesh and protect the lives and property of hapless citizens, and deserves to be roundly condemned, Saikia said.
