APCC flays Sarma over model school remark

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 19 - The APCC today condemned Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his latest comments on the proficiency of those who have their school level education in the government-run Assamese medium schools to teach in the model schools proposed by the government.

It warned Sarma not to make any comment on the competence of the students of Assamese medium schools. Rather, he should engage himself in providing the required drive to the public education system of the State and modernise it in the true sense of the term.

In a statement here, the APCC dared Sarma to make a categorical statement as to whether he is aware of the fact that a large number of people, who had their schooling in government-run Assamese medium schools, are working in reputed institutions of the State and other parts of the country and the globe.

It also asked the Education Minister to collect information on the number of English teachers of the States schools, colleges and universities, who study in such schools. Even the Education Minister himself was a student of the Assamese medium Kamrup Academy Higher Secondary School. Does he have any doubt over his own competence because of this, wondered the APCC.

It pointed out that two renowned scholars of English literature Dr Hiren Gohain and Dr Kabin Phukan had their schooling in Assamese medium schools.
