APCC decries BJP leaders remarks

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 6 - Senior APCC spokesman Apurba Bhattacharyya has described yesterdays behaviour of Lok Sabha MP Bijoya Chakravarty and BJP general secretary in-charge of Assam Mahendra Singh as irresponsible.

Both of them spoke without having any information of the ground reality of the Fancy Bazar blast, Bhattacharyya said.

Their allegation that there is no law and order in Assam and the State home department failed miserably in curtailing violent incidents, was nothing but distortion of facts, he said.

Yesterdays blast occurred when a discarded carton containing some damaged Barpeta-made crackers was picked up and set on fire by a rag-picker. According to the statement made by the rag-picker, he ignited the carton to get the pleasure of bursting crackers. But Bijoya Chakravarty and Mahendra Singh made their statements without trying to verify the facts. Singh even went a step further and demanded resignation of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on moral grounds for the blast, said Bhattacharyya.

Chakravarty and Singh had described the incident as an attempt at harming the Hindi-speaking people, but this is nothing but an exaggeration and it reflects the desperate bid of the BJP to mislead the Hindi-speaking people that they are unsafe under the present government and thus to derive political mileage, Bhattacharyya alleged.

The BJP-leaders also tried to describe the Assam Police as a worthless force. This will surely affect the morale of the Assam Police and no responsible political leader should make such a statement, said the APCC spokesman.

The statements made by the BJP leaders in this connection also make one believe that Assam Police has not been able to deal with the anti-social and anti-national forces, which is far from being true, he asserted.

He further mentioned that since the BJP leaders have demanded resignation of Gogoi on moral grounds, they also owe an answer to the people as to why Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not step down when renowned writers were threatened, innocent people and Vyapam scam witnesses were killed and a sick person was dragged out of his house and killed at Dadri, on moral grounds.

It is known by all to what extent Bijoya Chakravarty is a pro-people politician. In this respect one may remind her of the incident of bomb blast at Ganeshguri on October 30, 2008, when she took a person injured in the blast to the State Secretariat for holding a demonstration rather than taking him to the hospital for treatment, he said.
