APCC asks Centre to clarify position

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 5 - The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) today dared the BJP-led Union government to issue a clear-cut statement on why the prices of essential commodities have been soaring so high contrary to its 2014 Lok Sabha election pledge that it would bring down the prices to the affordable level of common people.

In a statement here, APCC senior spokesman Apurba Bhattacharjee said the BJP rode to power with such pledges, which have now proved to be gimmicks aimed at bagging the votes of gullible people.

The BJP had launched a campaign during the 2014 Lok Sabha polls to smear the image of the Congress that it was due to the latters sponsoring the syndicates that the prices of essential items were shooting up. The BJP then assured the people that it would take firm steps against the syndicates and bring down the prices of essential items to an affordable level.

But now, the prices of the essential items have doubled and the cost of construction materials has also skyrocketed. It is, therefore, the duty of the BJP-led Union government to tell the people in categorical terms as to why the prices of the essential items are still soaring, maintained the APCC senior spokesman.

Moreover, the BJP-led Union government also owes the people of the country an explanation as to how many jobless people have been provided jobs by it during its two-and-half-a-year stint in power. The BJP had assured the people of the country that it would be providing jobs to two crore jobless people every year if voted to power, Bhattacharjee argued.

The BJP should also tell the people in unambiguous terms as to what has happened to its pledge of bringing back the black money stashed in foreign countries and thus depositing Rs 15 lakh in the bank account of each of the bank account holders, Bhattacharjee said.
