TEZPUR, Oct 4 - Though Tezpur town is supposed to be one of the nations cleanest cities, presently the common people find no civic joy here as most of the areas/wards of the town are becoming filthier. Besides the locals, people who visit the town feel that the historic town known as the City of Beauty is nowadays fast losing its past glory and is turning into a city of garbage dumping due to many reasons including the lack of timely clearing of garbage by the authorities concerned and the anti-social activities perpetrated by a section of the town.
More importantly, the city which has even emerged as the second cleanest towns among the cities of North East Zone in the Swachh Survekshan 2020, based on the recent digital survey carried out by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, in reality provides a negative picture which irks the conscious section here.
Denizens of most of the areas including New Amulla Patti area (popular as Dalim Bora Path) under Ward No. 3 and Kanaklata Civil Hospital area have expressed their total dissatisfaction over the filthy condition in their wards that has almost thrown public life out of gear. Unhygienic atmosphere created by stray pigs and cows, throwing of waste materials on the street, etc., have totally destroyed the civic atmosphere in these areas. The frequent agitation by the cleaners or the civic body workers too compound the common peoples health and hygiene related issue. Moreover, the haphazardly and unscientifically constructed business complexes are also responsible in creating a filthy atmosphere defaming glory of the beautiful city. The filthy condition caused following allegedly dumping of waste materials and garbage in front of New Vishal Mega Mart on the Kanaklata Civil Hospital Road is a major example.
Other than these there are some other problems in the town among which are the deplorable road conditions, manholes at many places, non-filling of side bumps of the roads after excavation by different agencies like cable and PHC for their purpose. On the main road of the town near the public parking, deep potholes created after excavation for cable lines have not been repaired till date, which often creates a chaotic situation for the commuters and pedestrians.
Another notable issue is that though construction/repairing of some of the roads in the town have been executed, due to the poor quality of construction it has already started to wear off. Moreover, the rapid growth of vehicles and unsystematic parking in the town areas leads to unwanted traffic jams. On the other hand, the dilapidated condition of the main parking that came into being a few years back after filling up of the historic Dhuba Pukhuri in the heart of the town with a big budget project has remained a cause for concern. Though a huge amount of revenue is collected from this venture, the authority is yet to address major problems of the parking lot like water logging and potholes created following non-repairing or improper maintenance.
