AP Battalion�s raising day celebrated

BISWANATH CHARIALI, April 15 � �Police personnel belonging to 12th Assam Police Battalion have been rendering services in sensitive areas in and outside the State with punctuality, dignity and respect to the nation. Several jawans have laid down their lives while performing duty. We recall them and pay our heartiest tributes to them today. We will have to go forward following their footsteps and sacrifices.�

The above was observed by Ananda Prakash Tiwari, SP, Sonitpur and Commandant-in-charge of the battalion. The officer was hoisting the flag on the occasion of its 33rd Raising Day held at the Kusumtola based headquarter recently.

He also expressed hope that the personnel of the battalion would extend full cooperation in establishing peace and harmony in the region. This was followed by �swahid tarpan�, guard of honour and plantation. A good number of officers and jawans were felicitated on the occasion. Various sports competitions were also held among the police personnel of the battalion.

It is pertinent to mention that the 12th Assam Police Battalion was raised on March 19 in 1980 at Abhoyapuri, Goalpara and late Syed Mujibur Rahman was the first Commandant. Later, it was shifted to Guwahati temporarily, and finally the permanent headquarter was established at Kusumtola, Sonitpur in March 1, 1985 in a land measuring around 4.5 bighas having a firing range too.

Presently the battalion has a manpower strength of 1,177 officers and jawans. Its personnel, constables, Lumet Turung and Ali Ashraf Khan, cook, Bijoy Choudhury, and Havildars, Naren Pathak, Nathuram Das and Deven Kumar lost their lives in the hand of terrorists while on duty during the past years.
