AOA plans to develop sports at grassroots level

GUWAHATI, Nov 18: The Assam Olympic Association (AOA) is planning to spot talents throughout the State by adopting new schemes.

Addressing the media after holding the Executive Committee meeting here today, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who is also the President of the Association, said that the prime objective of the AOA is to popularize sports all over the State and work at the grassroots level with the programme billed: �Grass-root Olympic Mission Talent Hunt�. A committee has been set up to execute the programme with State Minister Pijus Hazarika as chairman and Mriganka Barman as his deputy.

Sonowal underlined the need for a sporting culture in the State to promote sports among youth. In this regard, he said that under the proposed programme, AOA will organize sports events in five categories covering players from 10 years of age to 60 years in the State. He also stressed on developing a strong network of grassroots level sports organizations with the AOA to take forward this mission in the State. He emphasised on improving ranking of the State in the Khelo India Games and for this purpose he asked concerned sports organizations to take adequate steps for training of the sportspersons and addressing their challenges. He also said that he would interact with the sportspersons soon who would represent the State in the ensuing Khelo India Youth Games, which is scheduled to be held in Assam from January 10 to 22.

Various sub-committees and commissions were also constituted in today�s Executive Committee meeting which include AOA constitution review committee, core committee, arbitration commission, athlete commission, co-ordination committee, finance committee, medical committee, sports development commission, youth commission, tender & purchase committee, sexual harassment committee, media committee along with a committee for �Grass-root Olympic Mission Talent Hunt�. Apart from this, Biswaroop Bhattacharjya of Karimganj was nominated as associate vice president of AOA along with 28 new executive members.�

Vice Chairmen of AOA, Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, MoS (Health) Pijush Hazarika, MP Ranee Narah, MLA Gurujyoti Das, AOA secretary Lakhya Konwar, Hockey India treasurer Tapan Kumar Das were also present in the press conference.
