Anundoram Barooah award to 15,738 students

GUWAHATI, Sept 13 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal ceremoniously presented the Anundoram Barooah award to 15,738 meritorious students of the State who secured 75 per cent or above marks in the High School Leaving Certificate, High Madrassa, Senior Madrassa, Sanskrit Pravesika and Pali Examination, 2017, at a programme held at Veterinary College playground here today.

The award carries a laptop with free Internet connection for two years, course curriculum of five subjects of Arts, Science & Commerce streams in text, audio as well as video form and free high quality software containing preparatory material for MBBS and engineering examinations.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Sonowal said the award would inspire the young students to take part in nation building and develop a life of dignity. Stating that the future of the nation depends on the young minds, Sonowal urged them to work with harmony, transparency and integrity. He also urged the students not to get lost in the crowd and called upon them to consider the award as a stepping stone for future success in life.

Sonowal further said that in this age of globalisation, information technology has significantly altered many aspects of life and urged the young students to take maximum benefit of the digital medium in their academic life. He, however, also cautioned them about the dangers of cyber crime and advised them not to get trapped in it.

�You will have to take the lead in developing a new Assam. Our Prime Minister Narendra Modiji has called the North East the new engine of new India. This will come into reality only when you take the drivers� seat�, the Chief Minister said, adding that in today�s competitive world, students need to maintain a positive attitude to overcome all types of challenges.

Quoting Bhupen Hazarika�s famous song, Manuhe Manuhar Babe, Chief Minister Sonowal said that the bedrock of Assamese civilisation is unity and harmony. �There are certain forces which are trying to disrupt peace. We have to follow the ideals of the stalwarts who espoused the ideals of peace, harmony and brotherhood. You will have to stand against the divisive forces and promote these ideals�, he said.

Underlining the importance of spiritual and moral learning, Sonowal said that society demands good people to ensure good governance. The academic institutions must take leadership in producing good people ingrained with ethical values, Sonowal added. He also called upon the students to show reverence to their parents and teachers for leading a successful and contented life.

Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while delivering his speech, urged the meritorious students to follow in the footsteps of Anundoram Barooah to make a successful and socially committed career. He said that Anundoram Barooah, through his works on Sanskrit literature, made an effort to establish the identity of the 5000-year-old rich Indian heritage in the world arena and immensely contributed to the nation building exercise, which is an integral part of development of states as well.

Highlighting the government initiatives for creating a level playing ground for students, Sarma said the State government would provide scooters to first 1,000 successful girl students of HS examination from this year. He also said the State government is working to strengthen the elementary education system of the State and within one year has appointed around 31,000 TET-qualified teachers. He mentioned the opening of universities in the names of Madhabdev, Bhattadev and Rabindra Nath Tagore in Lakhimpur, Barpeta and Hojai districts as well as new medical and engineering colleges in the State.
