NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Sept 20 - The Namani Subansiri Bandhbirudhi Sangrami Okya Mancha, an umbrella organisation of various bodies opposing the Lower Subansiri Hydro-electrical Power plant at Gerukamukh, will gherao Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal when he visits North Lakhimpur on September 23 next. This was stated by the front in a press release here today.
The release said that the decision to restart construction of dam work over Subansiri at Gerukamukh by the NHPC with full concurrence of the Assam government was a condemnable act, as it would pose a threat to the downstream areas of Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Majuli districts. The release referred to the strong stand taken by Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, who had scrapped the plans of 22 similar hydroelectrical power projects in his State for the safety of its people. It said that the Assam Chief Minister should follow the footsteps of his Arunachal counterpart in the interest of his own people by stopping the construction work of the LSHEP dam at Gerukamukh.
The anti-dam front further said that they would gherao Chief Minister Sonowal during his visit to North Lakhimpur to press him to quit the Memorandum of Agreement signed between the NHPC and Assam government over the LSHEP.
