Anti-coronavirus steps at Srirampur only an eyewash, feel scribes

By ANN Service

GOSSAIGAON, March 23 - Though the Kokrajhar district administration has engaged medical staff on NH-31(C) at Damrapara (Simultapu) along the Assam-Bengal border to check travellers, trucks, buses, and other vehicles passing through the route since a few days back against dreaded coronavirus, but only 3-4 medical personnel from Gossaigaon having no equipment are performing duties.

A few journalists who visited the area said the personnel are only checking vehicles and boarders and writing down their names and addresses. They have not even been provided with equipment for checking.

The scribes felt that if the equipment is not provided, then how would it be possible to detect virus-infected persons passing through the Assam-Bengal border? The whole process has only turned out to be an eyewash, they said.

Up to filing of this report, the medical staff engaged for the purpose as per the order of Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner Partha Pratim Mazumder, said they have been doing nothing but writing names and addresses of the passers-by.

On the other hand, the Gossaigaon subdivision on Monday observed a full bandh at the call of the Chambers of Commerce of Kokrajhar district owing to the fear of being struck by coronavirus.

Offices were partially open. Business establishments were fully closed. Some businessmen were also seen creating an artificial price rise. Banking, postal, LICI etc., were functioning.

However, buses were not running. Fruit and vegetables vendors have also hiked the prices of their products.
