Anti-CAA movement wont fizzle out: AASU

By R Dutta Choudhury

GUWAHATI, Feb 10 - The movement against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019 will not fizzle out as all sections of indigenous people of the State are participating in it, asserted the All Assam Students Union (AASU). The students body also claimed that no examination would be affected by the agitation.

AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya told The Assam Tribune that the people of Assam are prepared for a long movement against the CAA. He said that the AASU and 30 organizations representing various ethnic groups of the State as well as like minded organisations including the AJYCP and Sadau Asom Karmachari Parishad (SAKP) are constantly holding talks to chalk out future course of action so that the agitation never fizzles out. He pointed out that the students of the State lost one academic year during the Assam movement, but during the anti-CAA movement, no examination was affected and students hardly missed their classes.

Bhattacharya said that the arrogant attitude of the Government of India is unfortunate and expressed the view that the Centre should show respect to the non violent movement.

Though Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal recently commented that he is ready to have talks with the organizations agitating against the CAA, Bhattacharya said, there is no point talking with the Chief Minister as he has not been able to persuade the Central leadership of the BJP not to impose the CAA against the wishes of the people of Assam.

The AASU leader demanded that the Prime Minister should announce a time bound programme for implementation of all the clauses of the Assam Accord. He pointed out that Narendra Modi was the first Prime Minister since the signing of the Assam Accord who did not find time to discuss the implementation of the accord in last six years. All Prime Ministers since the signing of the Accord at least held talks to review the implementation of the accord. But Modi did not find time to do so in his first term and almost one year in the second term, he added.
