GUWAHATI, Sept 28 - The Forum Against Citizenship Act Amendment Bill (FACAAB) has opposed the reported move for 25 per cent re-verification of the NRC and insisted that only a minor re-verification should be undertaken, if it is necessary, in an atmosphere of peace and transparency.
The anti-CAA body chairperson Dr Hiren Gohain and convener Manjit Mahanta told the media here today that while it was reported that the recent Delhi visit of the Chief Minister and the Education Minister of Assam was undertaken in order to discuss the implementation of Clause Six of the Assam Accord, other sources have indicated that the main item on their agenda was to ensure the Centres support to the State governments demand for 25 per cent re-verification of the NRC.
While it is possible that the final version of the National Register for Citizens is not without some errors, such large-scale verification after an expenditure of Rs 1,600 crores and unrelenting work of 55,000 employees seems to be quite undesirable. If such reports are correct, it will upset multitudes, who had taken great pains to get their names on the rolls and may cause huge discontent. The usual provocations by communal elements of various hues may lead to serious social disturbance. The intention then is certainly not to ensure peace and harmony, but the contrary, the Forum asserted.
Arguing that the former NRC coordinator had stated to the Supreme Court that 27 per cent verification had been done before publication of the final edition, they added that the final version of NRC was published after revising the earlier draft NRC thoroughly, which was in itself a mammoth exercise.
In the interest of peace and harmony in the State, the FACAAB firmly opposes the reported move for 25 per cent re-verification and alert the public against the possible harm from such designs, the Forum added.
