PATACHARKUCHI, Aug 1 - Bajali subdivision in Barpeta district is once again reeling under flood with several areas going under water.
Floodwaters have entered through the damaged portions of the embankments along the Pahumara river at Gahinpara and Kalorguri.
The water level of the Pahumara rose suddenly due to additional discharge of water from the dam of Kuricchu hydroelectric project in neighbouring Bhutan and overwhelmed agricultural fields and human habitations.
Farmers who planted paddy seedlings after the last wave of floods receded have suffered huge losses.
The Pahumara has partially changed it course in Gahinpara, posing serious threat to the embankment in the area. The flood situation will worsen further if the embankment is breached.
The water current is also hindering the repairing work of the Pahala-Simlaguri road. A major portion of the newly constructed road was washed away between Kenduguri and Gahinpara recently, forcing people to take a detour to Pathsala.
Though certain protection measures have been taken by using bamboo poles and sand bags, these are unlikely to withstand the force of water for long.
Flood has become a regular phenomenon in the area, mainly due to discharge of water from the Kuricchu dam in Bhutan. Many low-lying areas of Pathsala town, including the subdivisional civil hospital and the fire station, have also been submerged under floodwaters, causing great inconvenience to the people, particularly the patients at the hospital.
Several roads in the town also remain under water.
