JORHAT, March 21 - The second incident of snatching of cash took place within this week, when two motorbike-borne miscreants reportedly snatching a bag having Rs 1.42 lakh from a businessman at Borpatra Ali on Friday.

As per the complaint lodged at the Jorhat Police Station by Nabajyoti Kakati of Tinikuria village on the Kakojan outskirts, he and a business partner withdrew Rs 5 lakh from a bank in the town and made a payment of about Rs 3.6 lakh. Thereafter, as they were carrying the remaining money in a bag, two motorcycle-borne persons snatched the bag from them on the busy Barpatra Ali, which runs in front of JB College and Jorhat Stadium, and sped away.

The incident comes close on the heels of an incident where a bag containing Rs 1 lakh was snatched from a woman near Jorhat Medical College and Hospital at Jail Road here on March 17.

Fridays snatching incident was the fourth in the town since January, apart from an unsuccessful bid by two motorbike-borne men to snatch a bag at Marwari Patty here on February 28.

The modus operandi of all the snatchings which have taken place in Jorhat is the same, with motorbike-borne miscreants wearing helmets committing the crime. Incidents of snatchings, burglary and vehicle thefts are increasing in the town.

In January 2019, Jorhat police had installed 32 CCTV cameras in different areas of the town under a project to assist in curbing crime, but most of the cameras are now out of order, a police source revealed.
