Annual festival of Rangiya Raijmel observed

RANGIYA, Jan 11 - The annual festival of Rangiya Raijmel, to mark the historic farmers� mutiny against the land tax imposition by the British during 1896 and the ultimate sacrifice made by several farmers in that incident, was observed with a two-day-long programme at the Rangiya Raijmel Swahid Krishak Bhavan premises here on January 9 and 10 last.

On the inaugural day, the programme started with mangalacharan by Yogacharya Jyotish Kalita, followed by paying of tributes to all the great farmer martyrs, including Mohan Chandra Kalita.

Later, a symposium was held on the role of Mohan Chandra Kalita in regard to the development of the farmers� community, agriculture in Rangiya in particular.

The symposium, moderated by Golok Ch Bhuyan, former Principal of Rangiya College, was also participated by Assam Freedom Fighters� Association president Krishna Kanta Lahkar, Rangiya Alochani Sabha president Pabitra Kalita and noted singer Nababuddin Ahmed as speakers. All the speakers highlighted the contributions of Kalita in the field of agriculture promotion in Rangiya.

The concluding day�s programme started with community prayer for peace by Rangia Gram Swaraj Parishad members. After the prayer, Munindra Bordoloi, SDO (Civil), Rangiya paid floral tributes at the Rangiya Raijmel Farmers Memorial, followed by an open session held later.

The session was presided over by Rajya Sabha MP Bhubaneswar Kalita and a few other distinguished persons.

The speakers recollected the 1,896 days of the historic farmers� mutiny, highlighting the contributions and sacrifices made by hundreds of farmers who laid down their lives. The programme concluded with the lighting of lamp by retired teacher and senior citizen Bangshidhar Kalita.
