Ankiya Bhaona Keligopal wows Dubai audience

BISWANATH CHARIALI, Nov 15 - After successful performance of Bhaonas Udyog Parva and Ravan Bodh in English outside Assam, Ankiya Bhaona Keligopal was staged successfully in Dubai in English for the first time under the banner of Prajanmya Unmesh, a leading socio-cultural organisation of the state on October 31.

Director of the Bhaona Arup Saikia told this Correspondent, �Our mission was to establish the pristine beauty of Indian culture like traditional play, namely Bhaona, which is a unique example of the rich cultural treasure of medieval India. We also wanted to promote the art form before a global audience.�

He further added that the language was only changed and the special features of Bhaona, including plays, dialogue, dance, costume, ornaments, besides style of entry and exit of the characters were kept intact.

Recipient of Padmashree, Dubai-based industrialist and Chairman of BRS Venture and NMC Healthcare, Dr BR Shetty inaugurated the event which was held in collaboration with the Dubai-based Assamese society and the Department of Culture, Government of Assam.

Significantly, Muslim youths played prominent roles in this Ankiya Bhaona, thereby reflecting the composite character and greatness of the greater Assamese society. The troupe comprised of many youths of the second generation and the artistes too were selected from across different religions.

The Bhaona, which was performed in English other than its original language Brajawali, kept the audience glued to their seats. Parliamentarian Kamakhya Prasad Tasa and Nagaon MLA Rupak Sharma were present on the occasion on behalf of the Government of Assam.
