Animal parts seized in city

GUWAHATI, June 18 � Sleuths of the Customs Department, Guwahati recovered 10.2 kilograms of tiger skull and bone along with 164 kilograms of scales of pangolin, a protected and endangered animal, from the Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport in the last 24 hours.

The international value of the seized items has been estimated at Rs 2 crore as per the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau of India.

While the international value of per kilogram of pangolin scale is estimated at Rs 60,000, ten grams of tiger skull and bone are sold at US $200, official sources claimed.

Sources in the department informed that the items seized were two different consignments meant to be airlifted to Imphal from Dimapur.

Sources further informed that the seized items have big demand in the China where it is used to make medicinal drugs and various other purposes.

�These items, as per our information, were to be smuggled to China via Myanmar,� a senior official of the Customs Department, Guwahati said.

Though no one has been arrested in this connection, the investigation has been intensified. Two cases have also been registered in the connection.
