HAILAKANDI, Aug 18 - The Anganwadi workers (AWWs) and helpers have decided to launch phase wise movement for the fulfillment of their seven-point charter of demands.

The demands of the Hailakandi district Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Association has been supported by the Assam Rajyik Karmachari Federation. A meeting of the members of the association and the leaders of the federation was recently held here under the presidentship of Saswati Roy. A large number of workers from all the five Integrated Child Development Schemes (ICDS) of Lala, Hailakandi, Algapur, Katlicherra and Manipur attended it and took part in the discussion.

The meeting urged the department of Social Welfare to release the last five months salaries of the workers and helpers immediately. After threadbare discussion, the meeting decided to submit a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Hailakandi, enlisting their seven-point charter of demands, on August 20.

The main demands of the association include increase in salaries and release of pending salaries, sanction of independent centres to all the AWW centres, regularisation of services etc. Some of the workers and helpers alleged in the meeting that they are being harassed by the authorities in the name of work in the Lala area of the district. The meeting also decided to organise the biennial conference of the association in Hailakandi in the second part of September.
