Anandaram Dhekial Phookan remembered

MORIGAON, Sept 25 - An august function was held at conference hall of the Morigaon District Journalists� Association on September 24 to mark the 172nd birth anniversary of Anandaram Dhekial Phookan, one of the most illustrious sons of Assam and the stalwart of Assamese language and literature as well as the renaissance of 19th century�s Assam.

The function, presided over by Birinchi Kumar Sarma, former president of Morigaon Press Club was held under the auspices of three socio-cultural organisations of Morigaon district namely� �Sabdakalpa�, �Jnanmanjuri� and �Paragjyoti Prakashan�. Explaining the purpose of the meeting, Lakhyajyoti Nath, editor of Bor Asom and the president, of �Sabdakalpa� said that though there was a big plan to observe the birth anniversary of Anandaram Dhekial Phookan at Morigaon, yet due to the corona pandemic, the organisers decided to curtail several items from the programme. He said that the memory of the doyen of Assamese language Anandaram Dhekial Phukan is on the verge of oblivion among the youths of Assam today. Phookan who established the Assamese language at the official level during the British rule in Assam way back in 1848 is not known to most Assamese youths today. He published his book, A Few Remarks on Assamese Language and on Vernacular Education when he was a Magistrate at Nagaon during the British days and this book was submitted to the then Governor General at Calcutta thereby establishing Assamese as an official language in Assam, Nath added.

On the occasion of the birth anniversary, three books were released. The Akash Tirbirai Hridoyat, a poetry collection written by Dr Leela Kanta Borthakur, Principal, Morigaon College was formally inaugurated by Dr Nanda Sing Borkala, SP, Morigaon. Releasing the book, Dr Borkala observed that to write something good is not an easy task. Dr Borkala said that the Assamese language and literature is very rich and the contributions made by Mahapurush Srimanta Sankaradeva to the language and literature is remarkable.

Releasing the other book namely Prajnar Sandhanat written by Jyotish Barman, former secretary of Morigaon Jnanmanjuri Chakra, Pratap Hazarika, president, Morigaon Zila Sahitya Sabha said that a treasure house of knowledge �the book� must be read by young students. Harendra Bora, noted poet and former MLA, Morigaon formally released another book Dak Pakhili written by Jyotish Barman.
