Amur falcons spotted in Manipur

IMPHAL, Oct 8 - Amur falcons have started arriving in Manipur�s Tamenglong district particularly on the bank of Barak river, sources said. Barak, which originates from Senapati district passes through Tamenglong district.

Sharing information with this correspondent, a resident of hill town, who is actively involved in conservation of wildlife in the district, said, �We have also spotted the first batch of Amur falcons.�

On Friday, Deputy Commissioner Armstrong Pame of Tamenglong district ordered a ban on all air guns and directed to deposit their guns to give a safe passage to Amur falcons during their migration period in the district.

�Amur falcons usually arrive in many parts of Northeast India, including Tamenglong district during the first week of October, and therefore the use of all air guns have been banned,� the DC said. Meanwhile, the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) scientists in collaboration with Manipur Forest Department are planning to tag five Amur falcons.
