Amulya Kakati award presented

GUWAHATI, Feb 9 � The Swabhab Shilpi Amulya Kakati Memorial Award 2014, instituted in the memory of the great actor, writer and theatre personality, was conferred on eminent playwright and director Sebabrata Baruah today.

The award function was organised at Vivekananda Kendra here by the All Guwahati Students� Union and Student-Artiste-Litterateur Welfare Trust of the student body.

Satriya exponent, Nrityacharya Jatin Goswami presented the award, which carried a memento designed by noted sculptor Biren Singha, a bouquet, eri jacket, cheleng chadar and a cash amount of Rs 25,000.

Amulya Anubhab, a documentary on the life and works of Amulya Kakati made by Rajib Bhattacharya, was screened on the occasion.

Sebabrata Barua has been associated with both professional and amateur theatre and his plays speak of the plight of downtrodden people and target social malpractices, corruption and communal hatred. Some of his works include Mukta Kanthat Shabdar Jhankar, Bikalpa Prabah, Sadacharar Madali and Aitar Sadhu.

Barua dedicated the award to his family, friends and critics. �I am honoured to receive this award instituted in the name of an extremely talented and humane personality,� he said.

Jatin Goswami also lauded the role of the student body in instituting an award in the name of Amulya Kakati and said that the organisers have to be extremely cautious in choosing the awardees in future also, so that justice is done to the award instituted in the name of a great personality.

Amulya Kakati was also a founder member of the Student-Artiste-Litterateur Welfare Trust. A playwright par excellence, Kakati�s plays like Ami Actor, O-Aa, Natak, Rang, etc., carry social messages. Some of the television plays directed by Kakati are Heibate, Kuhiramar Prem, Dhole Dagare, etc. His documentary All Alone If Need Be on the life of Sarat Chandra Singha won the National Rajat Kamal Award in 1986.

AASU advisor Dr Samujjal Bhattacharyya gave an account of the works taken up by the students� body for the students, artistes and writers. �Specially, we are trying to offer help to the needy and meritorious students,� he said.

�Amulya Kakati was our friend, philosopher and guide in the true sense of term and we have learnt many things from him, including the zeal to work in a constructive manner,� he said.
