JORABAT, Nov 14 - The Amri Karbi Students� Union (AKSU) today have raised a demand to exclude six constituencies of the Tiwa Autonomous Council, under the Dimoria block in Kamrup Metro district, from the upcoming elections.
Following a Gauhati High Court order directing the State government to cover all the 36 constituencies in the Tiwa Autonomous Council elections, scheduled for early next year, the AKSU today held an urgent meet at Phong-Ari near Samata. During the meeting, the leaders discussed their strategies and asserted that they would never allow holding of elections to the six constituencies of the Tiwa Autonomous Council.
These six constituencies are 26-Dimoria (reserved for ST), 32-Digaru (open), 33-Khetri (ST women), 34-Sonapur (open), 35-Ampri (open) and 36-Phong-Ari (open).
The government had earlier excluded six constituencies of the Council in the polls held in 2010 and 2015, citing law and order problems.
The Amri Karbis, who have also been demanding a separate autonomous council, do not want themselves to be included in the Tiwa Autonomous Council, arguing that while they constitute the majority of the total population of the area, the Tiwa population is only around three per cent.
The student body also said a meeting of six Amri Karbi organisations will be held on November 16 and then a series of intense protests will be organised if their demands are not met.
