Agartala, March 10 (IANS): Tripura State Rifles (TSR) troopers will provide security during the upcoming Assembly polls, a top official said on Wednesday.

"Twelve companies of India Reserve Battalions of the TSR have been sent to the poll-bound States. Their deployment would be at the discretion of the Union Home Ministry," Tripura's Director General of Police K Saleem Ali told IANS.

West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will have polls in multiple phases in April-May.

The TSR was constituted in March 1984 to deal with terrorism in the State. Nearly 75 percent of its troopers are from Tripura while rest are from across the country.

According to Ali, the Union Home Ministry has recently approved a proposal to set up Counter Insurgency and Anti-Terrorism (CIAT) school in Tripura.

"A team of police officers have visited army's CIJWS (Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School) in Vairengte in Mizoram and CRPF's (Central Reserve Police Force) counterinsurgency training centre at Silchar in Assam, to gain experience for the establishment of CIAT in Tripura," Ali added.
