Congress begins preparation for elections in Manipur: AICC leader

Imphal, July 23: The All India Congress Committee (AICC) leader Bhakta Charandas today said that the party has begun preparation for 2022 elections in Manipur.

Addressing a press conference in Imphal on Thursday, AICC in charge for Manipur said that the party has begun preparation for the election. "In seven days we'll wind up all the roadmap for the next 2022 elections," he said.Manipur goes to polls in March 2022 along with four other states. When sought official confirmation about the resignation of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Govindas Konthoujam from his post, he replied that the resignation has been received and will take a call very soon on that issue.

Reports said Govindas, six times elected Congress MLA from Bishnupur assembly constituency, resigned from his post.He was appointed as President of MPCC in December last year. After arriving in Imphal on wednesday to take stock of the situation arising out of the MPCC president's resignation from his post, the AICC leader had been attending a series of meetings with the Congress leaders and other party functionaries. Responding to a question that some Congress MLAs are reportedly heading to join the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Congress in charge for Manipur said that this kind of discussion has no value. The AICC leader also accused the ruling government for not addressing the Covid situation in the state.

Former Chief Minister and CLP leader O Ibobi Singh,Congress Working Committee member Gaikhangam led congress MLAs and party functionaries were also present during the day's press conference. The Congress has 17 members in the 60 member Manipur Legislative assembly which was reduced to 54 in the recent past after three members were disqualified and three Congress MLAs resigned earlier. The ruling BJP has 24 MLAs.
