Newspaper Society warns hawkers of legal action

GUWAHATI, Feb 20 � Based on a first information report (FIR) lodged with Dispur Police Station on February 18, police today arrested two functionaries of the hawkers� association under Section 241/ 323/506/34 of the Indian Penal Code even as the stand-off between the hawkers and newspaper agents continues.

However, later they were released on bail. The FIR was lodged by Nripen Sarma, representing the newspaper agents.

Meanwhile, the hawkers� association has decided to extend their agitation for another three days with the protest entering its fifth day.

Later in the day, another case was registered with the Dispur Police Station under Sections 203 and 304 of the IPC. The Northeast Newspaper Society has meanwhile, expressed dissatisfaction over the recent developments and condemned the hawkers' decision.

A meeting held in the GL Publications office on Wednesday warned the distributors and the hawkers not to resort to such activities and call off the strike immediately. �If such things recur, the Society will not hesitate to take legal action against them,� a press release stated.
